RFT draft outline - review and comments
List of participants: Giorgio Domino, Brad Gilmer, Al Kovalick, Brian Bokor, John Footen, Oliver Morgan, Dieter Haas, Frank Schaffa, Rico Zimmermann, Ian Wimsett, Richard Cartwright.
Apologies: Jean-Pierre Evain
Giorgio and John had produced a first outline of the RfT, which was circulated prior to this webex File:RFT outline v01.doc.
Giorgio introduced the document and brought some background on the different sections proposed. The RFT currently focuses on broadcast production (handling media files or media management in general). Whether the RFT should be extended to cover more of the business management remains to be decided, at list bridging production and related business processes (e.g. the example of advertising with a strong relationship between media and business management). This would need to be covered at least when describing basic business and associated production processes.
Some of the comments included the need to include requirements from creative people but also specialists and non-specialists.
The RfT should also take into account that many processes cannot be fully automated and that it should be possible to have flexibility to create processes. Solutions should also support B2B collaborative projects (inc. outsourcing, cloud environments).
The RfT will also tentatively identify the weaknesses of existing technologies.
Giorgio put some emphasis on the review of the actual scope and objectives (technologies covered) of the RfT. Of course, each technology should be further defined through additional concise requirements (although we should never come ot the level of details as in existing media management systems).
Transport should also be covered in the RfT as the trend is to consider transport as a 'service' (as part of the RfT interface model).
There was agreement that the RfT should focus on capture, playback, tranccode and transfer.
The RfT will also contain all the necessary administrative aspects: submission guidelines, evaluation rules, etc.
The objective is to have a text for final review and approval during the F2F meeting in March.
A new version 0.2 has been issued at the end of the webex File:RFT outline v02.doc.
ACTION: Everyone to continue reviewing the document and notify Giorgio and John from missing parts before 28th January.
ACTION: All to consider a section on which to contribute some text
JPE note: I had not received any e-mail from Oliver for joining the reflector, but this was done after I got the request from Brad.
