Welcome
Giorgio and John, co-chairing the meeting, welcomed all the participants to this kick-off meeting of the new EBU-AMWA task force on service based production (until we get a better name).
Review of Agenda by Giorgio
Giorgio has prepared a draft agenda, which was approved.
Scope of the Task Force
Giorgio introduced the draft terms of Reference and highlighted the main actions foreseen as the core of the task force work.
Bob asked for clarification on the IPR policy of the project. The current position is that the project will operate under the IPR policy of AMWA as EBU doesn’t have such a clearly defined position. Bob explained that the experience shows that some companies need to take particular actions in order to be able to contribute under these AMWA terms and maybe the ToRs need to reflect this more precisely.
ACTION: all to review the ToRs and propose an amendment to reflect the IPR policy of the project more clearly, if required.
John asked if anyone had a suggestion for a good task force name. A competition is open until the next meeting.
ACTION: all to think about a name for the task force, to be decided during the next webex.
Description of previous work of P/NP and MSAG
Giorgio presented the current EBU related activities:
- P/NP (Networked Production) addressing: interoperability of IT production systems (problem of integration of equipement and systems), criteria for service eligibility, key elements of a service description model, best practices in encoding and wrapping formats
- P/CP (Common Processes) identifying/describing common processes for news and drama and testing service definition starting with ingest
John presented the AMWA/MSAG activities:
- Since 06.2007, goals similar to P/NP, working on architectures and file based workflows
- Main results: an open wiki with a glossary, best practices, survey to the attention of the industry (what is needed for standardisation and specification)
- Interest in P/CP work starting from ingest – early unfinished work on service definition to be likely taken over by the new EBU-AMWA TF
Organization of work
The Task Force will use several collaborative tools:
Wiki (wiki.amwa.tv/ebu)
The wiki will be used to publish webex reports, gather documents, collects requirements from the EBU – AMWA constituencies and others.
ACTION: everyone to test the access to the wiki and contact Brad in case of problem
ACTION: Jean-Pierre to work on a preliminary structure for the wiki based on experience gathered from the EBU-SMPTE synchronisation TF wiki. Both wikis are using the same environment.
Reflector: ebu-amwa@list.ebu.ch
A reflector is being maintained by EBU. The reflector is at present reserved to EBU and AMWA members, although external parties may be added on a case per case basis (policy to be reviewed as the project develops).
At present, the reflector is composed of the individuals listed in the EBU-AMWA members section of the wiki (see the sidebar).
ACTION: all to check possibly missing participants and inform Jean-Pierre or Elisabeth (Ecoffey@ebu.ch)
Webex
Most of the work will be carried out during weekly 60-90’ webex organised by EBU on Thursdays at 17:00 CET. Invitations will be circulated via the reflector.
NOTE: no webex on 25.11 due to Thanksgiving
The next webex will be organised on December, 3, 10 and 17 followed by January, 7.
F2F meetings
It is anticipated that F2F meetings will be needed at least to finalise the Request for Technology, to allow proponents to present their proposals, and to evaluate responses.
No milestones could be defined during the present webex but it is acknowledged that deadlines will need to be setup a.s.a.p.
Circulation of information
Information will be made available via the reflector and the wiki. Information should be as public as possible.
Webex will be announced via the reflector.
F2F meetings will be announced via the relector and also via the wiki if appropriate.
The existence of the Task Force will be publicised via the EBU news pages and the AMWA MASG forum. The EBU also proposed to organise a press announcement.
ACTION: Brad, Hans, Roger, Jean-Pierre, Giorgio to draft a joint release. This will be published after the TF a chosen a name.
Contributions and output documents
The following RFT policy was proposed for finalisation at the next webex:
- All parties willing to contribute are invited to participate in the definition of requirements for the scope and technologies covered by the RFT
- The RFT will be edited by an independent party (the EBU was proposed based on experience in similar cross-industry platforms)
- Comments on the RFT will be sought from all interested parties until the EBU-AMWA TF chairs proclaim the editing phase closed
- All contributions to the RFT shall be made simultaneously to AMWA and EBU under the AMWA IPR policy
- Submitters shall not be involved in the review of the proposals
- Results in whatever form will be co-published by EBU and AMWA.
ACTION: all to review the above tentative summary of the current webex discussion for review and final definition at the next webex.
